    CUPID’S SHAFTS
    Because roots love water
INFORMATION FOR USING CUPID’S SHAFTS IN PLANT & SHRUB IRRIGATION
Cupid’s Shafts are constructed of high-grade plastic and will not deteriorate even though they will be in the soil indefinitely as they transfer water to the roots.
To open the package simply slice it open from top to bottom with a sharp knife or pair of scissors. The package shafts, 1 steel insertion spike, 1 plastic insertion spike cap and this page of information. Once the shafts have been positioned in the soil, the only remaining item will be the insertion spike and plastic cap. Be sure to place the insertion spike somewhere easily accessible for use for relocation of existing shafts in coming months.
Drainage holes have been drilled at the 4” and 8” levels of each of the Cupid’s Shafts. This allows for water and oxygen to escape into the soil.
    Preparing the insertion spike
    :
after opening the package assemble the insertion spike cap onto the insertion spike by placing the cap over the threaded end of the spike so that the spike enters the small ¼” hole located inside the bottom of the cap. Turn the cap clock-wise onto the spike until it becomes tight. Do not over-tighten the cap onto the spike or the threads will strip.
    Inserting the shafts
    :
First you will need a household hammer. Then, in the soil about every 3 or 4 feet from each other in all directions, drive a Cupid’s Shaft into the soil. To do this, place the insertion spike into a shaft so the top of the shaft fits into the plastic cap and the end of the spike should protrude about 2 inches below the bottom of the shaft. Place the protruding portion of the spike into the ground on a bit of an angle, hold the shaft in one hand and pound on top of the cap until about 3” of the top of the shaft is above the ground surface. Then simply pull up on the cap to remove the insertion spike. The base of the spike is small so damage to any existing tree roots and root tips will be minimal. Cupid’s Shafts should be inserted so they are about 3’ or ‘4 apart, so determine the location of the next shaft and repeat the process.
    Watering and fertilizing the roots:
Under normal circumstances rain water will find its way into the shafts and will be delivered into the soil and be absorbed by root tips. During dry periods, pour water frequently into each of the shafts. While fertilizing is very effective by sprinkling of granular fertilizer directly on the near-surface roots, for additional fertilizing support, pour a mixture of dissolved fertilizer and water directly into the shafts. Each shaft has a capacity of about 4 oz, so the more shafts utilized, the more water will slowly be released into the soil.
    Caution:
Overfilling the root system with water can cause waterlogging. While this is unusual it is something to be aware of.
