“The bitterness of poor quality remains long after the sweetness of low price is forgotten” – Benjamin Franklin
You can buy less expensive belt on eBay. But why?
Rubber drive belts do "work" but are a quick fix that puts unnecessary strain on the mechanism due to their "one size fits all" elasticity and hardening over time. This is why rubber drive belts are replaced every few years on turntables. Rubber was available during the entire production era of cylinder phonographs, AND ALL MANUFACTURERS USED LEATHER because it performed better and fit each machine to-measure. You can spend - elsewhere for a rubber band, or do the job right (and maybe learn a new skill).
What makes this belt better than the others? Aside from being soft, pliable, and having just the right color, it has a sharp 90* edge which rides in phonograph pulleys nicely. It's smooth side is smooth. It's rough side is less smooth, not having excessive fiber or dust. It works straight and true. It has no lateral curvature AT-ALL. It is straight and beautifully mended on a high speed professional leather mending machine. I sourced this leather specifically for use on antique Cylinder phonographs, particularly Edisons. BUT, it helps those few underpowered Graphophones: The small double spring Type B "Eagle, and the single spring Type Q (and variants) run even better because the belt tracks the pulleys better, and requires less mechanical effort to perform its duty. I have created a video on YouTube which shows you the simple method for splicing (mending) the belt using simple glue, plyers, and a very sharp razor blade. Type in PHONOGRAPH LEATHER BELT and it should come up. Shown are machines which I have used the belt on. THEY ARE NOT INCLUDED IN THIS AUCTION (you wish!), but are used to show you how the belt is utilized. It is especially good on Class-M phonographs, which require a 7/32" wide belt for the governor shaft and 5/16” for the main pulley drive (available in another auction. . This belt is EXACTLY 7/32" wide. PLEASE ASK ALL QUESTIONS, AND I WILL REPLY AS SOON AS HUMANLY POSSIBLE.
YOU ARE PURCHASING FIVE FEET. If you need more, order more.
You can spend more (or less) elsewhere but you can not buy better.
If you need 5/16” width, I sell that in another auction.
The last photo shows you how straight the belt is.....this is important so that it tracks centered between your drive pulleys.
