Vintage Backus Novelty Co Locking Clamp Hat & Coat Lock Pat 1912 & 1918

Description

Unusual Backus Novelty Company, Smethport, PA, locking clamp hat & coat lock with original working key.
Originally called the "lightning check system".
Patented March 26, 1912 (1,021,343) and October 12, 1918 (1,156,739).
Magnet sticks to lock.
Lock measures 3 3/8” high by 2 1/8” at widest point by 1 1/8”.
Lock has patina and marks consistent with use and age.
Some surface rust.
To open:
with name of lock in upright readable position, insert key with “FRONT” side facing down and push in.
